About me

My name is Rosie Jefferson and I am a qualified and registered Therapeutic Play Practitioner, and soon to be qualified Play Therapist.

I have a Degree in Childhood Studies, Early Years Teacher Status, and a Masters Degree in Psychoanalytic Observational Studies.

I have 25 years of experience working with children and families in a range of settings and am an adoptive parent, so I understand the unique experiences and needs of children and how much they can benefit from therapeutic support.

I am passionate about seeing children and their families thrive and am dedicated to empowering children and their families to navigate life’s complexities with greater understanding, emotional tools, resilience, and a renewed sense of hope. I wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of therapeutic play to unlock the potential for growth and healing, enabling each child to flourish in life.

Who can I help?

I work with children between the ages of 4 and 12 who are struggling in lots of different ways, for a whole variety of reasons. For example:

  • Children who are struggling emotionally - perhaps they are sad, anxious, angry, have mood swings, struggle to regulate their emotions, find it hard to be open about their feelings.

  • Children who are struggling socially and are finding it difficult to navigate relationships at home or school.

  • Children who are struggling to manage their behaviour - perhaps they struggle with impulse control, maintaining concentration, lashing out, difficulty responding to boundaries.

  • Children who have low self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • Children who struggle to engage with school, or to manage the transition between home and school.

  • Children who have experienced something difficult, traumatic or upsetting.

  • Children who are neurodiverse and are struggling to navigate aspects of life.

If a child is struggling psychologically, emotionally or socially, then play therapy could really help them, so do get in touch to find out more.

What is play therapy?

Play therapy uses play and creative arts to help children to process and make sense of their feelings and experiences, and to express themselves in an accessible way.

Children may not have the words to express their thoughts and feelings, and may not understand why they behave the way that they do. Therapeutic play offers children a developmentally appropriate way to explore the things that are troubling them in a safe and accepting environment.

As a play therapist, I provide children with a range of resources to choose from in the playroom, such as a sand tray and miniature figures, role play, puppets, musical instruments, games, and art materials. I come alongside and support children in their play to enable them to explore what they need to, within the safety of the therapeutic space.

Practical information

When I receive a referral for a child for play therapy, I meet with parents and teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the child's needs and how I can support them in therapy.

As a peripatetic play therapist, I travel to the child. I make arrangements with the school for play therapy sessions to take place in a confidential space during the school day.

Children are usually offered a minimum of 6 sessions of play therapy to begin with, which can be extended as needed as part of the review process. Sessions are 40 minutes and take place at the same time each week.

I also work directly with schools providing play therapy for half or full days, offering therapy for individual children and in small groups.

Testimonials

"My son truly benefited from his play therapy sessions with Rosie. He felt he had a safe and supportive space, and she was brilliant at working at his own pace, allowing him the time he needed to open up. The sessions provided a fantastic outlet for his creativity and self-expression, and we've noticed he's been able to bring new and helpful tools into both his school and home life."
